Zendaya Says It Was Hurting To Perform Rue In Euphoria Season 2

Zendaya, who plays Rue in the HBO drama Euphoria, says that playing the role in season 2 was tough since the character approaches rock bottom in forthcoming episodes.

Zendaya, who stars in the HBO drama Euphoria, stated that portraying Rue in season 2 was difficult for her and other cast members. The show, which is based on a 2012 Israeli series of the same name, follows a group of adolescent characters as they deal with difficult issues such as sex, drug addiction, and relationships. Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya, begins the series with mental health concerns and struggles with drug addiction, which she overcomes throughout the course of the first season.

Rue was last seen coping with the truth of her heroin addiction in the show’s two Christmas specials, which aired in 2020, before the season 2 debut of Euphoria. In a meeting with Ali (Colman Domingo), Rue reveals that she is suicidal and pays a surprise visit to Jules’ (Hunter Schaefer) residence, where the two characters try miserably to resolve their love for one another.

Rue’s road does not get any easier as season 2 begins: in the season opener, “Trying to Get to Heaven Before They Close the Door,” she nearly overdoses again.

Despite the fact that Rue and Jules do eventually patch up in the episode, it looks that Zendaya’s character’s situation will not be better anytime soon. The 25-year-old actress told RadioTimes.com ahead of the season’s launch that Rue in Euphoria season 2 will hit rock bottom, but she’s certain that series creator and showrunner Levinson won’t keep the character in that gloomy place for long. Zendaya stated:

“This season, more specifically, she goes to the rock bottom. When we get midway through, that’s when the rock bottom hits, and that’s where it became extremely painful for all of us to watch. And to portray her going through it hurt me.

Zendaya believes Rue is a stand-in for Levinson, who relies on real-life events when composing Euphoria, and that viewers will feel a sense of optimism for the heroine despite the “extreme low” that lies ahead. Rue begins the second season of Euphoria by wallowing in more drugs with the new character Elliot (Dominic Fike), implying that she will continue to battle addiction.

In a trailer for the forthcoming Euphoria series, Elliot meets Rue and Jules at school by chance, potentially putting another stumbling block in Rue and Jules’ relationship.

Since Zandaya stated Rue’s rock bottom would fall in the midst of season 2, there’s cause to suppose she’ll be in a better spot by the close of the eight-episode season. Euphoria premiered to a series-high 2.4 million viewers on HBO and HBO Max on January 9, according to Warner Media, making the controversial adolescent drama more well-liked than ever in 2022. Although Rue reveals her season one fall back to Jules in the most recent episode, it appears that her newly-taken-up interest in Elliot will leave Jules skeptical of Rue’s capacity to become (and stay) sober in the future episodes. It’s unclear what role Elliot will play in the rest of the season, but given his initial impact on Rue, it’s unlikely he’ll provide a hand in guiding Rue out of that dark place.
