A ten-year ban has been imposed on Will Smith by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The verdict was made in response to Smith’s on-stage smack of Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards on March 27th. According to a letter given to the whole membership by AMPAS President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson, Smith would be prohibited from attending any Academy activities or programs, in person or digitally, including but not limited to the Academy Awards, as a result of his “unacceptable and harmful behavior.”
Smith stepped down from AMPAS on April 1, although membership is not required to attend the Oscars. Smith will be unable to attend the ceremony until at least the 2033 ceremony. However, the verdict does not preclude him from being nominated in future years.
The letter offered “profound thanks” to Chris Rock for keeping his cool under pressure. According to reports, Smith’s Best Actor Oscar was never in jeopardy of being stripped away from him.
