Weekend Box Office: Morbius Holds The Top Spot With $39 Million Opening

Despite the controversy surrounding the film, Morbius topped the domestic box office in its debut weekend. The newest Marvel superhero film swooped into cinemas this past week and grossed $39.1 million USD in its first weekend. Despite a lower audience attendance than in prior Marvel releases, this sum was sufficient to give Morbius the upper hand over its rivals.

Morbius, according to Sony Pictures, surpassed the $39 million mark this past weekend, when it was shown in more than 4,200 venues. The film, which is directed by Jared Leto and stars Jared Leto, demonstrates how committed moviegoers are to comic book movies outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Morbius‘ box office success comes after reviewers panned the picture for its paper-thin premise, which has earned the film a dismal 17 percent on Rotten Tomatoes so far.

Morbius raked in $44.9 million at the worldwide box office this week. The film now has a budget of $84 million, and that figure will climb as additional countries across the globe welcome Morbius. The picture allegedly cost $75 million to produce, excluding marketing costs. However, after just one week in theaters, Morbius is doing rather well, despite the film’s dismal critical reception.

Morbius has a long way to go at the domestic box office to rival The Batman, which currently holds the top spot for 2022 films. Spider-Man: No Way Home came in second place with $228.6 million in domestic ticket sales. Uncharted, Sing 2, and Scream make out the top five grossing pictures at the US box office in 2022.
