The year 2022 is turning up to be a phenomenal one for Universal Pictures. While Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick was the year’s largest box office success and Disney has produced two Marvel Studios pictures, Universal is presently conquering the box office this year. This weekend, Universal reported that its worldwide box office revenue for the first seven months of 2022 surpassed $3 billion, making it the first studio to achieve so.

Two massive blockbusters have carried Universal to box office triumph in 2022. The return of the original Jurassic Park trio helped bring in $976 million worldwide for the third installment in the Jurassic World franchise, Jurassic World: Dominion. Minions: The Rise of Gru, the long-awaited sequel has earned a whopping $790 million throughout the world. These two films alone have accounted for more than half of Universal’s office revenue this year.
However, Jurassic World and Minions are just two of Universal’s successes this year. The Bad Guys, the most recent DreamWorks animated picture, grossed $246 million worldwide. In 2022, two R-rated films from Universal raked in more than $100 million, with The Black Phone reaching $152 million on a very low budget and Nope topping $113 million in only a few weeks. After the success of Get Out and Us, Jordan Peele’s latest film, Nope, has been his third picture in a row to gross more than $100 million.
Universal has had a successful year so far, but the studio’s box office total will only increase over the next several months, as a few major releases remain. Universal’s next projects include Halloween Ends and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Both are tremendously popular franchises and should bring in some serious business.
