Today marks the day that Top Gun: Maverick will surpass The Batman to become the film with the second-highest domestic gross of the whole year. The movie brought in an additional $14.1 million on its third Friday, bringing its domestic total to $357 million. If all goes according to plan, the picture will bring in $50 million over the course of the weekend. This will bring the film’s total earnings in the United States to about $393 million. Maverick is on track to cross the $700 million mark later today and will wrap up its third weekend with about roughly $740 million globally.
In the following few days, Maverick will also surpass Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to become the year’s greatest domestic hit. By Sunday, Doctor Strange 2‘s domestic total is anticipated to reach somewhere in the neighborhood of $400 million. And once it hits the $403 million mark, Maverick will overtake Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as Paramount’s second-biggest domestic blockbuster of all time, and will fall only behind Titanic ($658 million).
It shouldn’t be out of the question for one of Cruise’s films to gross over $1 billion worldwide, given that his films have always brought in high multiples. With two further Mission: Impossible films scheduled for release in 2023 and 2024, Cruise is gearing up for a late-career battle with himself.
