Rumors of a Joker sequel have been circulating since filmmaker Todd Phillips‘ Joker smash hit notched up phenomenal successes in 2019. In spite of doubts, it looks like 2019’s most divisive film is poised to return for a second round.

In an Instagram post, director Todd Phillips shared that a new Joker film was underway, with Joaquin Phoenix reportedly on board. The first image depicts a red-cover screenplay with the title “Joker: Folie à Deux, authored by Scott Silver and Todd Phillips,” while the second image has Phoenix reading the script. “Folie à Deux” is the French term for an identical or similar mental condition that affects two or more people, often members of a close family. Despite the fact that Phoenix has yet to sign a deal, it is claimed that he is inching to seal a deal to resume his role. As of 2019, Phillips has already begun working on a sequel to the Academy Award-winning picture. It has been rumored that Scott Silver, who co-wrote the original script with Phillips, would return for the sequel.
Phoenix won the Oscar for best actor for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck, a troubled man who evolved into a folk villain at the end of the movie. Joker raked in $1.07 billion worldwide, which is an astounding number considering the picture had a budget that was on the lower end of the scale by comic book movie standards. In addition to Phoenix‘s triumph, Joker got eleven Oscar nominations, with composer Hildur Gudnadottir winning for best music. Joker was lauded for resembling an early Martin Scorsese picture more than a comic book film, despite the fact that it did feature certain comic book tie-ins, including the appearance of a younger Bruce Wayne.
