The debut date for Pixar’s Toy Story spinoff film, Lightyear, has been announced by Disney+.

Lightyear is one of those movies that will probably be remembered more for the circumstances that surrounded the production of the picture than anything else. Despite the fact that the filmmaker made an effort to make clear where it stood in the Toy Story canon, there was a great deal of uncertainty over how it can fit. The addition of a same-sex pair has also sparked controversy. The final reviews were positive, but the film’s box office performance was less than stellar. At this point, it would seem that Disney and Pixar are all set to begin its run at the box office.
This morning, Disney made the announcement that the first episode of Lightyear will hit Disney Plus on August 3rd. This will take place after the film has been shown in theaters for two and a half months but before it is made available on home media. It would be the second Mouse House-owned film to leave its stamp on a streaming service after having a very brief run in theaters; the previous film to do so was Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Lightyear is now playing in theaters.
