Robert Eggers is well-known for his ability to blow the mind of audiences. Eggers can break the limit of cinema with his weird look but still visually compelling.

In his recent project, The Northman, he has done it once again, but this time doesn’t seem right. Eggers directs his most costly movie about a Viking fighting for revenge; however, for this time, The Northman is not enough to fulfill the director’s thrilling style of filmmaking.
Eggers is the director of The Northman, and also co-writer with Sjón. The movie stars Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, and Anya Taylor-Joy. Willem Dafoe sometimes appears, but it is the long-expected return of Björk that makes this casting even more special.

Looking from the surface, the plot appears to be “basic” but becomes deeper if you spend more time on this movie. The young and older Amelth, who is played by Oscar Novak and Skarsgård, respectfully said: “I will avenge you, Father! I will save you, Mother! I will kill you, Fjölnir!”
This special sentence pops up sometimes throughout the story to cover the two-thirds purpose of the flick. It doesn’t follow the standard revenge story path; nevertheless, The Northman spreads the idea of what is the life purpose of a person if that purpose has been untruth.
There are some points when Amelth meets certain characters during his journey—like Heimir The Fool (Dafoe) and Seeress (Björk), that boosts the main character’s depth. Nevertheless, as the Northman continues, some of that depth is blown away and it depends much on the visuals to let it come to an end.

Don’t misunderstand me. I was in “awe” of what I was witnessing but begined to remember that provocative plot instrument closer to the end of the film.
Skarsgård has been working as an actor for a long time; additionally, there have been many audiences counting on his appearance rather than his acting. The Northman gives Skarsgård a golden chance to shine his strength. In the trailer, the movie is introduced to be an epic action acid-laced journey through a Viking’s adventure, but there is still much time for Skarsgård and the rest of the cast members to show their acting muscles. In the movie, Amelth’s mother, Queen Gudrún, played by Kidman, introduces her A-game. I strongly believe that the awards season occurring last year witnessed an extreme push for her role.
Over the past few years, Hawke has played some significant roles. The actor has nailed it in Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone and Marvel Studios Moon Knight, and in The Northman, he also does the same. Although Skarsgård and Taylor-Joy have some chemistry at the beginning, the obligatory “love” relationship between them can’t be kept in the third act.

In this junior movie, Eggers keeps showing his talent in filming gorgeous shots. It is estimated that The Northman budget is about $70,000,000, and this movie seems to look the part. The LSD fueled collection of Amelth’s family was a stunning moment in the project’ in addition, some smaller to medium scenes later go on that trend. The level of flair is strengthened through Egger’s night shots.
With a crisp look, he emphasizes blue and other dark colors to create a satisfactory aesthetic. It is surprising that the scenes that impressed me most are some camp raid set-pieces that are displayed throughout the movie. Moreover, Steadicam is used by Egger to show the carnage that occurs with long constant shots that seem like they are testing foundations for something more noticeable in his future films.
Egger has joined my list of directors that I will definitely buy tickets to his latest movie on the first day, only with his name alone. He keeps promoting his skills in telling a visually fascinating story.

Still, it’s unfortunate that at the end of the second act, The Northman has some problems in some of the plot points and doesn’t fully heal. To be honest, the movie is epic and most of the acting is excellent but it’s surprisingly not my favorite film directed by Egger. The Witch – a movie that might tell something about me, has stolen my heart.
