In the 2020 prequel to Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy, Songbirds and Snakes, Coriolanus Snow, age 18, is the final hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from favor in a post-war Capitol. The 10th annual Hunger Games are drawing near, and the young Snow is frightened when he learns that he will be in charge of mentoring Lucy Gray Baird, the girl who will be representing the poor District 12 in the competition. But following Lucy Gray’s rebellious performance at the reaping ceremony, which captured everyone’s attention in Panem, Snow begins to believe that he may be able to turn the odds in their favor and save their lives. Uniting their natural inclinations for showmanship with their newly acquired political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s struggle against the clock to live will, in the end, expose who among them is a songbird and who among them is a snake.
The screenplay for the film was penned by Michael Lesslie and was based on a draft that was written by Collins and Michael Arndt. Francis Lawrence, who helmed the Hunger Games films, will return to the director’s chair of the movie. Franchise producer Nina Jacobson and her producing partner Brad Simpson, together with Francis Lawrence, will oversee the production. Executive producers will be Tim Palen, Suzanne Collins, and Jim Miller. Meredith Wieck and Scott O’Brien are on board as the studio’s supervisors.
