The first trailer for Lightyear, a Toy Story spinoff about the in-universe cosmonaut who originated the character of Buzz Lightyear, has been published by Pixar. Lightyear is Pixar’s first spin-off feature, and while a brief look of the picture was shown during last year’s Disney Investor Event, this is the very first chance we’ve seen any scenes from it since then.
“Back when we created the first Toy Story, we designed Buzz Lightyear with the idea that he was a toy based on some really cool character from an epic blockbuster film. Well, all these years later, we decided to make that film, “ Pete Docter, Pixar’s chief creative officer, spoke of Lightyear at the Disney Investor Day.
Angus MacLane, who formerly directed the Pixar films BURN-E, Small Fry, and the tv special Toy Story of Terror!, directs Lightyear. Finding Dory was also co-produced by MacLane and Andrew Stanton.

Because Lightyear will center mostly on the acter Buzz Lightyear rather than the toy Buzz Lightyear, Chris Evans will voice this new character instead of Tim Allen. Evans said on Instagram about his casting in the role:
“Trust me when I say that they REALLY know what they’re doing over there. This one is gonna special, and it doesn’t step on a single thing. I can’t even put my excitement into words. I smile every time I think about it.”
Toy Story was Pixar’s debut showcase picture, released in 1995, and Toy Story 2 was the studio’s first sequel. Toy Story 3 ended the original trilogy in 2010 with a farewell to Andy, the toy characters’ owner, whereas Toy Story 4 ended the series with a farewell to Woody. If Pixar has shown anything over the years, it’s that Toy Story is one of their most popular and famous series, and it doesn’t appear like they’d develop this spin-off unless they had a wonderful concept for Buzz Lightyear’s iconic character.
On June 17, 2022, the film Lightyear will be released in cinemas. Below is the first teaser for Lightyear.
