‘The Black Phone’ Trailer: Ethan Hawke With The Most Terrifying Role of His Career

Every horror enthusiast knows that a horrifying narrative doesn’t have to involve demons or spirits. For example, in the forthcoming horror film The Black Phone, 13-year-old Finney (Mason Thames) is contacted by a mature man who appears as a fun magician, only to abduct him when he lets his guard down. The horror movie set in the 1970s (and present world) will hit theaters this summer, following a change in the release schedule that canceled a February debut.

Horror film festivals have been showcasing The Black Phone poster for a long now. It shows Ethan Hawke wearing a terrifying mask that would make even the toughest person tremble. According to Universal Pictures, the video shows how terrifying the mask is in motion, as well as how Hawke’s character (dubbed “The Grabber” in the film) uses it to adopt a nasty persona in “the most terrifying role of his career.”

Finney’s link to other youngsters is also addressed in the trailer; the worldly narrative takes a supernatural turn as prior victims of the masked man converse with Finney and band together to help him escape, taking the storyline to a whole new level. In case you were wondering, the black phone in the title is a contraption that is meant to be broken, but it suddenly starts ringing and connects Finney with the other kids. If you like, you may take the call here.

Scott Derrickson, who rose to popularity after directing the highly acclaimed The Exorcism of Emily Rose, is the director of The Black Phone. Derrickson collaborated with Hawke on Sinister and directed Doctor Strange, the first superhero film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. C. Robert Cargill, a longtime collaborator who previously wrote Sinister and Doctor Strange, co-wrote the script with the director.

Madeleine McGraw (Pacific Rim: Uprising), James Ransone (It: Chapter 2), Jeremy Davies (Lost), and E. Roger Mitchell (Outer Banks) round out the cast.

On June 24, The Black Phone will be released in cinemas. The following is a link to the trailer:
