Strange New Worlds, the Star Trek television series centered on Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew on the USS Enterprise, is expected to launch in a few weeks. To prepare us for the momentous event, Paramount+ is introducing us to the show’s new cast members.
Among the newcomers is Hemmer (Bruce Horak), the Enterprise’s pre-Scotty engineer, an Aenar who looks to be a very cool, very confident genius. Hemmer, like all Aenar, is also blind. His other senses, as seen in this 30-second film, more than compensate for his blindness.
Take a look at the clip below:
Additionally, you may have observed that Hemmer resembles an Andorian. If you did, you are correct – Aenar is a subspecies of Andorian that inhabit the Andorian arctic. It was in Star Trek: Enterprise that we first meet the species by chance, when Captain Archer (Scott Bakula) “realizes” them and discovers that they possess telepathic skills.
We had no way of knowing for certain if the Aenar had joined the Federation until we saw Hemmer. Given that Hemmer is Pike’s Starfleet engineer, it is reasonable to assume that they are both members of the interplanetary organization.
Hemmer is simply one of the Enterprise’s crew members. We already know Spock (Ethan Peck) and Pike’s Number One (Rebecca Romijn), who will appear with a youthful Uhura in Strange New Worlds (Celia Rose Gooding). Other new crew members — Chief of Security Lieutenant La’An (Christina Chong), who shares the surname Noonien-Singh with Chong — and Lieutenant Ortegas (Melissa Navia — have also had their own 30-second introductions, which you can see below.
Paramount+ will bow Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on May 5.
