Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s latest teaser provides fans more details at the Blue Blur’s heated battle with Knuckles the Echidna.
The video, which premiered throughout the Super Bowl, centers on Dr. Robotnik’s reinvigorated intentions to kill Sonic with the assistance of a terrifying new ally. The teaser shows numerous new footage of Knuckles battling against the Blue Blur in various arenas. As the two snowboards slip down the side of a rocky mountain, Sonic remarks that his opponent reminds him of “The Winter Soldier,” a reference to the Marvel character Bucky Barnes, who achieved widespread acclaim in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The video also features a view of what looks to be the Death Egg Robot, a machine that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 aficionados can not forget.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a straight sequel that is planned to expand on the universe established in the original film. Aside from Knuckles’ introduction, fans can expect Miles “Tails” Prower to play a greater role in the plot. While Sonic and Tails are canonically great friends in the video games, the film appears to be about the start of their relationship. Fans will also remember the strong Chaos Emeralds, magical jewels that have become a series staple. The official synopsis of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 states that the Chaos Emerald will be the major focus of the film, with both Robotnik and Knuckles on the quest for it in order to attain endless power.
Fans will certainly be thrilled to see that both Knuckles and Tails resemble their video game versions, avoiding the controversy that arose in the previous film over Sonic’s original design. Following the release of the Sonic the Hedgehog video, social media was swamped with tweets expressing outrage at the Blue Blur’s more “realistic” traits, such as human-like hands and eyes. The outcry was so strong that Paramount altered the speedster to seem more like the video game character fans know and adore.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be released in theaters on April 8th, directed by Jeff Fowler and starring Ben Schwartz, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Jim Carey, and James Marsden, with a story written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller.
