The plot of Secret Invasion will pit Nick Fury against a hostile universe. A recent USA Today special demonstrates how helpless he is in the face of the Skrulls’ impending menace.

Nick Fury’s power has never derived from his immortality or ability to see through time, despite the fact that he has both in comic books. He has always been able to wield power thanks to his connections and intellect. But after spending some time away from Earth, Fury returns to a planet overrun with Skrulls that he can do nothing to stop. A brand new video from Secret Invasion shows off Fury returning to the espionage game to take down the menace and rebuild his ties with figures like Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes; all while Skrulls reveal precisely how far they’ll go to defeat him.

A large part of the paranoia in the original Secret Invasion comics came from not knowing which of the fans’ favorite superheroes might be aliens in disguise. While the program promises a true-to-form spy thriller, it looks to overlook some of the stakes by just adding one Avenger in the shape of Don Cheadle’s War Machine. Although it looks to be off to a fantastic start, the show has a lot of territory to cover to recreate that suspense!
