Netflix’s chief content officer has confirmed that the smash-hit Korean show Squid Game will make a return for a second season on the streaming service.

Squid Game, Netflix’s crowd-puller series, has been renewed for a second season. Hwang Dong-hyuk designed Squid Game as a labor of love that took over 10 years to complete. Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Jung Hoyeon, and Oh Yeong-su were among the many actors that appeared in the first season. The show followed 456 down-and-out contestants as they competed in a series of children’s games, with the losers suffering fatal consequences. The lone winner of the games, on the other hand, will collect ₩45.6 billion, which is slightly more than $38 million (USD).

Season 1 of Squid Game premiered on Netflix on September 17, 2021, to critical acclaim and a large audience. The show swiftly surged to the top of Netflix’s streaming ratings, amassing 1.65 billion viewing hours in its first 28 days. With its eye-catching graphics and positive word-of-mouth, Squid Game quickly became part of the pop-culture lexis with fans clamoring for a second season. Netflix appears to be fulfilling those aspirations.

According to Variety, Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s co-CEO and chief content officer, announced Squid Games’ upcoming season 2 during the company’s fourth-quarter 2021 earnings call. Sarandos, on the other hand, noted that “the ‘Squid Game’ world has just begun,” hinting that Netflix has ideas beyond merely another season of the series. While spectators are assured of a second season, Squid Game appears to be just getting started.

Following the premiere of Squid Game, the program also made awards history. It was the first Korean series and the first non-English-language series to be nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award. Jung Ho-yeon was nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series, while Lee Jung-jae, the show’s protagonist, was nominated for Best Actor. All the cast of Squid Game was nominated for Best Cast in a Drama Series. Squid Game got three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Television Drama. Furthermore, Oh Yeong-su won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, making history as Korea’s first Golden Globe winner.

The second season of Squid Game is still unknown, while the finale of season one provides some hints. Gi-hun was last seen with multicolored hair when he refused to board his flight. Instead, he decides to track down those responsible for the games. The second season could also pick up where the first left off with Jun-investigation, ho’s which ended abruptly with no resolution. While the show’s creator has already announced that he is working on ideas for a second season, Squid Game will most likely keep most things under wraps until the show’s premiere date. Season 2 of Squid Game, on the other hand, is already in the works.
