Malick Bauer, a German actor, will play the eponymous Sam — A Saxon in Disney+’s upcoming German-language original series.

The drama series, created by the same people that brought you Deutschland 89, is based on the true tale of Samuel Meffire, East Germany’s first Black police officer. As an outcast growing up, Sam is forced to join the police force after his father’s murder and rises to become a symbol of current society in post-reunification GermanyWith the disintegration of the USSR in the 1990s. But, just a few years later, Sam himself is imprisoned as a state enemy.

Jörg Winger, the producer of Deutschland 89, is producing the series alongside Tyron Ricketts for Panthertainment under his Big Window Productions.

Tyron Ricketts, who plays Sam’s mentor Alex, Svenja Jung, Nyamandi Adrian, Paula Essam,  Luise von Finckh, Ivy Quainoo,  Martin Brambach, Aristo Luis, Thorsten Merten, and Daniel Klare star alongside Bauer in the seven-episode miniseries.

The seven-part Disney+ original miniseries, directed by Soleen Yusef and Sarah Blasskiewitz, began filming in Germany in January and is scheduled to wrap by the end of May.

Sam – A Saxon is part of Disney+’s lineup of non-English language originals created in Europe, as part of the streaming service’s drive into the European market. Other Disney+ European originals include the French serial Oussekine, The Ignorant Angels from Italy, and Feyenoord Rotterdam, a Dutch sports documentary.
