With a new teaser for Disney•Pixar’s “Lightyear,” the Oscars went to infinity and beyond this year. And, in keeping with the celebration of cinema, unlike Pixar’s “Soul,” “Luca,” and “Turning Red,” it has been announced that this upcoming feature will be released in cinemas and IMAX.
Chris Evans, who plays the new Buzz Lightyear (sorry, Tim Allen), introduced the new clip from “Lightyear,” which wasn’t all that different from the previous promotional materials, though there were a few new shots (not that we’ve been forensically compiling every shot, because that would be weird, right?)
The announcement that “Lightyear” would be released in cinemas, including IMAX large-format theaters, is even more exciting than the new footage. This will be the first Pixar animated film to have a broad theater release since “Onward,” which was released in the spring of 2020, just days before the epidemic shut down the whole world.
Various stories claim that Pixar artists were dissatisfied with their demotion to Disney+ original films, despite the fact that they have been immensely popular – “Soul” won the Best Animated Feature Oscar last year, while “Turning Red,” released earlier this March, set Disney+ records.
Still, it sprang to sense that “Lightyear,” as part of the “Toy Story” series and bringing with it the gigantic weight and expectation (and huge retail possibilities) that goes along with it, would be a theatrical-exclusive project. It was far from certain, so it’s fantastic to know that it’ll be released in cinemas – including IMAX!
“Lightyear,” directed by Pixar mainstay Angus MacLane, stars Chris Evans, Keke Palmer, Josh Brolin (as Zurg! ), Peter Sohn, Uzo Aduba, and Taika Waititi, and discovers the origins of the fabled space ranger.
On June 17, it will be released in cinemas and IMAX.
