Netflix Revealed That The Squid Game Universe Has Just Started Off

Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, reveals more the Squid Game is on the way, and it teases the series' extension into a universe.

According to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, the Squid Game series is becoming an universe. Squid Game, which Hwang Dong-hyuk created, wrote, and directed, has become a global hit and one of Netflix’s most popular programs of all time. The survival thriller’s first season follows 456 people from various backgrounds as they participate in a variety of children’s games for the chance to win a huge sum of money.

Squid Game, starring Lee Jung-jae, Jung Ho-yeon, Park Hae-soo, Gong Yoo, and Lee Byung-hun, has defined itself as a pop-culture phenomenon. Since the show’s premiere in September 2021, Netflix has released an official series line, prominent YouTuber MrBeast has created a real-life Squid Game set, and the show has received multiple awards. Squid Game, although losing its top spot on Netflix’s ratings, has maintained its popularity and looks to be paving the way for Western K-drama translation. Seasons 2 and 3 of Squid Game are now available on Netflix, according to Dong-hyuk.

Netflix confirmed Squid Game season 2 is on the way and teased a lot more for the survival drama series. Sarandos, Netflix’s co-CEO and Chief Content Officer, said Squid Game had been come back for season 2 during the streaming service’s fourth-quarter 2021 earnings call, adding, “The Squid Game universe has just begun.”

For season 2, Jung-jae is supposed to reprise his role as protagonist Seong Gi-hun. Season 1 of Squid Game ended with  unclear hints, with Gi-Hun opting to try to halt the next round of games rather than coming home to visit his family. However, Gi-hun’s to the arena might go either way: he could re-enter the lethal competition to ruin the games, or he could become the new Front Man in a mass of events. For the time being, it appears that Netflix intends to expand the Squid Game plot outside the lethal arena.

Given the events of Squid Game season 1, it’s safe to assume that season 2 will have a totally new cast, with the exception of Jung-jae. At this moment, Netflix has not announced a likely release date for season 2. Dong-hyuk spent a decade refining his concept for Squid Game, and it’s doubtful that Netflix will give him that much time to complete the second chapter. The reason why Squid Game earns so much love from movie lovers is that it was so much more than a survival game plot, and it’ll be intriguing to figure out how the series’ creators expand the Squid Game universe.
