We are so used to Jodie Whittaker as Doctor for such a long time on Doctor Who but this year, we’re about to say goodbye to her portrayal of the Time Lord’s thirteenth incarnation. The trailer for Legend of the Sea Devils, the second episode of Whittaker‘s final adventures as the Doctor, has been out.
The voyage will premiere on April 17th, 2022, it’s a pirate’s dream come true, but it’s also a melancholy time for admirers of her Doctor. After Peter Capaldi departed with new showrunner Chris Chibnall, Whittaker took over the program, and the two are departing together before former showrunner Russell T. Davies returns to the show. For those of us who adore Whittaker’s work, all of this is both exhilarating and heartbreaking.
After the Doctor’s companion Yaz, played by Mandip Gill, revealed her real affections for the Doctor in Eve of the Daleks, the special had a lot to account for. Despite the fact that the Doctor is notoriously lousy with emotions, witnessing the two unravel their bond in Legend of the Sea Devils will be a fascinating character study.

Legend of the Sea Devils’ teaser introduces us to a fresh group of pirates as the Doctor, Yaz, and Dan (John Bishop) struggle to figure out what’s going on. The episode brings to life the famous pirate Madame Ching and still has some classic entities that the Doctor must comprehend, taking us back to the historical episodes of the program that made it so legendary when it first aired in 1963.
Whittaker‘s tenure as the Doctor is drawing to a close, and while we don’t yet know who will succeed her, her tenure as the Time Lord has established a precedent. The Doctor has been played by a remarkable pool of white male actors for nearly 50 years, and Whittaker gave many of us the concept that anybody might be the Doctor!
While it’s unclear what this implies for the show’s future, the teaser for Legend of the Sea Devils takes us on a swashbuckling journey that should delight fans of Whittaker‘s Doctor and Doctor Who in general! On April 17th, 2022, the new special will premiere. It will be difficult to say goodbye to Whittaker at the end of the year, but this video suggests that she will have a new adventure to add to her tenure as the Doctor.
