A Pierre Boule novel served as the inspiration for the original Planet of the Apes movie. The 1968 film starred Charlton Heston as an astronaut who crash-landed on a world inhabited by sentient apes only to find that he was actually on Earth after a nuclear war had decimated the planet. The wildly popular movie spawned a number of Planet of the Apes sequels, a TV show, and a Tim Burton remake in 2001 before Fox revived the property with a trilogy that debuted with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes and starred Andy Serkis.
