For over two decades, the Prince and Princess of Wales’ romance was tabloid fodder, making virtually daily headlines in the world’s 24-hour media cycle. HBO’s intimate and immersive new look at the former’s life uses only contemporaneous archival audio and video footage to transport audiences back to key events in Diana’s life as they occurred, including her seemingly fairy-tale public courtship and wedding, the birth of her two sons, her and Charles’ bitter divorce, and Diana’s tragic death on August 31, 1997, at the age of 36, on August 31, 1997. The picture unfolds as if it were in the present, enabling spectators to feel the overwhelming admiration, as well as the severe examination and frequent evaluation of Diana’s character. In addition, it acts as a mirror of contemporary society, expressing the public’s own concerns, worries, goals, and wants.
