The theatrical release date for the Ghostbusters sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which Sony hinted at CinemaCon via a sizzle reel and which was confirmed by director Jason Reitman and writer Gil Kenan on Ghostbusters Day, June 8, is set for Wednesday, December 20, 2023.

As was alluded to in the closing credits of Afterlife, the following chapter will take audiences back to the New York City and firehouse settings of the original movie.
Sony held Ghostbusters: Afterlife throughout the epidemic, when cinemas were shuttered, and the film was a cornerstone of the Thanksgiving 2021 holiday box office, racking up over $200 million globally.
Wednesday, December 20 is also the day when Paramount’s feature-length animated The Tiger’s Apprentice and Warner Bros.’ musical The Color Purple arrive in theaters. On that Friday, December 22, Paramount still has an untitled Star Trek film and Disney still has Rogue Squadron slated.
Sony’s Ghostbusters film series has brought in over $938 million worldwide across four films.
