‘Doctor Strange 2’ Pays Epic Homage to ‘Evil Dead II’

Bruce Campbell, who starred in the ‘Evil Dead‘ movie and appeared in other films such as ‘Darkman‘ and the ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy, has been friends with director Sam Raimi since their adolescence.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a nice payoff cameo that many fans of the original Evil Dead flicks were hoping for.

Some appearances in the most recent Marvel Cinematic Universe movies were the worst kept secrets ever, and Bruce Campbell was at the top of the list. It would have been nearly criminal for director Sam Raimi to leave out his oldest friend, with whom he began his movie career.

Campbell appeared in Raimi‘s films The Evil Dead (1981), Evil Dead II (1987), and Army of Darkness (1992). Not to mention Campbell‘s appearances in Darkman and all three Spider-Man flicks directed by Sam Raimi. As a result, fans may expect to see him in ‘Multiverse of Madness‘.

The nature of Campbell‘s look, however, remained uncertain. Raimi starred as a suave wrestling announcer in the Spider-Man trilogy, then a pushy theater usher, and lastly a puzzled French maître d’. All three were timeless classics. None of them, however, compare to Raimi and Campbell‘s appearance in ‘Multiverse of Madness‘.

When Doctor Strange and America Chavez land on Earth-838, they are confronted by a street food seller, who accuses Chavez of stealing before berating Strange. The Master of the Mystic Arts then seizes the condiment-wielding palm of the Campbell‘s vendor, who then squeezes Strange with mustard in mockery. After slathering himself with mustard, the vendor’s hand slaps him about and smacks his head on the cart.

On its own, the sequence is hilarious, but Raimi-Campbell fans are well aware of what has just happened. The hand of Ash Williams (Campbell) in Evil Dead II gets haunted. And it starts to beat him up at that period, similar to how the vendor’s hand smacks him about in ‘Multiverse of Madness‘. Of course, in Evil Dead II, Ash ultimately slices the possessed hand off with a chainsaw, splattering blood all over his face, which is probably where the vendor’s mustard came into play. ‘Multiverse of Madness‘ did not venture into that territory.

In cinemas currently comes Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
