Reportedly, Simon McQuaid will be back in the director’s chair of the upcoming Mortal Kombat film at New Line.

Mortal Kombat was one of the biggest hits to be released during the pandemic era. In April 2021, the cinematic adaptation of the famous video game was launched in cinemas and on HBO Max. Mortal Kombat debuted at number one and racked up $54 million throughout its theatrical run. However, the majority of the film’s popularity occurred on HBO Max, where it currently maintains the record for the most views in its first 17 days on the service, surpassing films such as The Suicide Squad, Godzilla vs. Kong, Wonder Woman 1984, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Given the pandemic popularity of Mortal Kombat, Warner Bros. is going ahead with a sequel. It was rumored in January that Moon Knight author Jeremy Slater will write the sequel. The director of the original film, Simon McQuoid, will return to helm the sequel.
