When Venom became a shocking box office blockbuster in 2018, it sparked the production of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Jared Leto’s Morbius, and Aaron Taylor-Kraven Johnson’s the Hunter. Sony has also begun searching through its Marvel character collection for potential heroes and villains to adapt. Madame Web was later identified as another hero deserving of the studio’s attention.
In 2019, Sony recruited Morbius writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to write the script for Madame Web. S.J. Clarkson, the director of Jessica Jones, was later confirmed to be directing Sony’s first female-led Marvel film in 2020. With COVID-19 drastically changing the studio’s plans for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, it’s no surprise that work on Madame Web has slowed considerably. That all changed lately, though, when news broke that Dakota Johnson was in negotiation to play the lead in the film.
Dakota Johnson has now posted an Instagram photo of the initial paper with a straightforward spiderweb icon as a caption. This verifies that Johnson’s contract negotiations with Sony have come to an end, and that he will really run Madame Web. Last week, Deadline reported that Dakota Johnson was in talks with Sony to direct the next Spider-Man spinoff film. Over the weekend, the Fifty Shades of Grey and Suspiria actress hinted to the prospect of this happening on social media, but today she’s confirmed her Marvel role.

Johnson’s performance in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter earned her critical acclaim, and she now takes on the role of Madame Web. Since wrapping work on the Fifty Shades trilogy in 2018, Madame Web will be her first franchise film. Alternatively, she’s invested the last few years working in indie films, including The Peanut Butter Falcon and the upcoming Am I OK? in 2022. Johnson appears to be ready to return to larger productions and become an action hero after taking a break from them.

Officially, the story of Madame Web has been announced with the rising star Dakota Johnson, and further details on the film should be ready shortly. The characters Johnson will play are now unknown, as Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff may have changed the character, which is normally played by an elderly woman, to fit their new star. Johnson could also be playing the Julia Carpenter form of Madame Web, formerly known as Spider-Woman, from the comics. With Madame Web rumored to start filming this year, more information about the tale and Dakota Johnson’s Marvel heroine should be available soon.
