A number of fresh and seasoned MCU performers formally declared their return to the fold at D23, giving Anthony Mackie and the cast of Captain America: New World Order a hearty welcome.

The Leader will be played by Tim Blake Nelson, who previously featured in the Incredible Hulk in 2008. After portraying Isaiah Bradley in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Carl Lumbly is reprising his role as the original super soldier. As Joaquin Torres, Danny Ramirez returns, and Israeli hero Sabra will be played by MCU newbie Shira Haas.
Since 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Mackie has portrayed Sam Wilson, and throughout much of that time, he has also portrayed the hero The Falcon in movies like Captain America: Civil War (2016). But once Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) gave Wilson his shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019), it seemed obvious that Wilson would ultimately take over as Captain America. By the end of his Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), in which Sebastian Stan played Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier and Mackie played Captain America, Mackie’s Wilson had fully embraced the title of the superhero. The series also addressed issues of legacy.
The next Captain America film is the brainchild of Malcolm Spellman, the writer of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Dalan Musson, a writer for the program. The movie, whose release date is May 3, 2024, is being directed by The Cloverfield Paradox director Julius Onah.
