Lionsgate confirmed during its recent CinemaCon presentation that production on the first John Wick spin-off film Ballerina would kick off this summer. Also announced is that Golden Globe nominee Ana de Armas has officially joined the production as the film’s female protagonist.
The project was initially revealed in 2019, after the theatrical release of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, which gave us the first glimpses of the Ballerina assassins trained by the Ruska Roma syndicate, which is led by Anjelica Huston‘s character.
Ballerina revolves around a young female assassin seeking vengeance against those responsible for her family’s murder. Len Wiseman will be at the helm of the film from a script written by Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead). James Myers will supervise the film for Lionsgate. Keanu Reeves, Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Chad Stahelski are behind the spin-off’s production. In John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, John (Keanu Reeves) comes across what seems to be the title ballerina, or at the very least, the origination of the new character.
Lionsgate is presently wrapping up production on John Wick: Chapter 4, which is scheduled to open in cinemas on March 24, 2023. Additionally, the company is developing the prequel series The Continental, which will premiere as a three-part limited series on Starz.
