Jason Momoa is set to return in his follow-up under DC Studios, which recently welcomed James Gunn and Peter Safran as new executives. However, the $250 million production budget for the James Wan-directed Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is said to have exceeded expectations.

Following the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as the co-CEOs of DC Studios, which manages the franchise for Warner Bros. Discovery under David Zaslav, there have been and will continue to be changes made to the DC Universe. Part of these changes is the financial arrangements for each project, including Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Speaking of money, while Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is undergoing reshoots, a Variety report reveals that the sequel, which was directed by James Wan, cost more than $205 million to make. Pam Abdy, the co-head of Warner Bros. Pictures, gave the director the go-ahead to reduce the budget.

Despite claims that Warner Bros. Discovery has cut costs since the merger, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom‘s budget is quite high for just one movie, and DC Studios may look down on it in the near future, which the company would not like.

Although the sequel to Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been given a Christmas release date in 2023 and has undergone some reshoots with minor adjustments to its story, the fact that the budget over $205 million may prevent further reshoots.

The first Aquaman movie proved to be a jewel for both DC and Warner Bros. despite having a budget of between $160 million and $200 million, it surpassed expectations at the box office by earning $1.148 billion globally.
