Adult Swim has revealed that it has given the go-ahead for the production of two new anime series, one of which will be an adaptation of the popular television show Rick and Morty.
The ten-episode anime series Rick and Morty: The Anime will be directed by Takashi Sano, the director of Tower of God. Sano was also at the helm of the two wildly successful Rick and Morty anime shorts, Rick and Morty vs. Genocider and Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil), both of which are likely major inspirations and catalysts for the full-length Rick and Morty anime underway.
The official premiere date of the anime has been still kept under wraps as of yet. Adult Swim did emphasize, however, that it will be an original work featuring ideas and events derived from the main series. In addition to Sano’s two anime shorts, Adult Swim has published other Rick and Morty anime-inspired shorts, the first of which, Samurai & Shogun, was released in March 2020. The Great Yokai Battle of Akihabara, a third animated short based on the series, will premiere in October 2021 and has a sequel due out in November 2020.
Adult Swim also announced that the futuristic action/adventure anime Ninja Kamui has been given the go-ahead. The series will be directed by Sunghoo Park (Jujutsu Kaisen, God of High School) and will tell the narrative of a former ninja who flees his clan and attempts to hide from his violent past in the United States, only to be compelled to face his past abroad.
